Last year some of my students wanted to make comic books for their classmates to read and I wanted to have standards for what I would allow in my classroom so I created a lesson for all of my students.

To be honest, that lesson didn't go well. I allowed students to turn in either a comic book or a story in Google Docs and the comic books didn't look good and the stories didn't accomplish the purpose I set out, so I scrapped the whole thing and started over.

This year, I read aloud the first book in the Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy series and since I had the same request to do comic books, I tried again.

I used my Heroes and Villains lesson that I had posted previously on my blog and added a rubric and story guidelines, etc. This assignment was much more successful.

The second half of the request was that students get to share their books in a bin in class. We came up with a set of rules, because these books are rare, one of a kind works of art.
My teammate took this picture at the end of the first day of school this year. I'm smiling and that's a good sign. This is the beginning of year 28.

Three years ago, a woman I'd never seen before knocked on my door and asked me if I planned to divorce my husband. I discovered that the life I thought I had wasn't real. I joined a recovery ministry to get help for myself and ended up co-leading it. (This is the story of my life.) My ex passed away suddenly this March. It's been a rough three years.

I share this on a teaching blog, not to get sympathy, but to share how experiencing multiple emotional traumas affected my ability to focus and learn. It's one thing to read a book about trauma. It's another thing to live it and process it and try to come through it as a whole human being.

Speaking of focus and reading, I used to be able to read at least a book a week. I am doing well if I finish a book in a month. This is one way life's events have affected me. Experiencing this helps me understand why my students struggle to focus on school work.

The morning my school introduced trauma-informed instruction, the school counselor began with a list of adverse experiences. I identified with so many of the experiences on the list, that I bolted from the room.

As I have processed through my own emotions, I have gained empathy. I have students who have been through so much and yet they show up every day and try to focus.

My life right now is so different than what I expected, but I'm finding ways to be better not bitter. My support group has an elementary teacher as a recovery leader, and they are okay with that. My students have a recovery leader as their teacher, and I know they are better off for that.

As a person of faith I do believe everything works together for good...even when I don't feel it.

Ft. Dix 1983 -- I didn't share my military experience for a while except
when participating in two truths and a lie. People would thank me for
being a veteran and I would awkwardly thank them.

A friend and
fellow veteran has encouraged me the last several years to stand for
those who can't. We teach at the same school so we would both stand during the school assembly. Students would turn around to stare.

I think what I have is survivor's guilt. I didn't make any difficult sacrifices. I left service
better off than when I went in. The military paid for my college and gave me some life experiences that helped me when I became a teacher.

If identifying myself with those who
didn't have it as easy helps them, I'm in.
Did you survive Halloween?

This year Halloween was on a Thursday, which meant that Friday we had school with overtired, over-sugared students.

We weren't supposed to wear costumes, but some students ignored that directive. Since we changed the dress code, we don't really do anything when students come to school dressed inappropriately.

One of my students came dressed as a unicorn. She refused to math and when I pushed her, she whined, "My biggest problem is that Halloween is on a school day!" I wanted to agree with her.

One year I had a class where costumes were a regular occurrence. There were hoodies that looked like animals. One day three of them came dressed in Hogwarts robes. They did okay until they got carried away with the wands at recess.

To paraphrase a meme, if nothing exciting happened today, did you even teach?

I missed blogging. I had to come back and I'm surprised that after two years of ignoring Artistry of Education, my following has grown.

I have had quite a personal journey in the last five years and I may share bits and pieces here, but most of it feels like it belongs in a bad made for TV movie instead of a teaching blog.

I went back to teaching the fall of 2016. I spent three years teaching fifth grade in a gifted and talented program. This year I moved to third grade in the same program.

But enough about me...

This last week I had student/parent/teacher conferences. After years of traditional parent teacher conferences where I told the parents how things were going and then they went home and told their children, I facilitated student-led conferences for three years. This year, I decided to give everyone a list of questions ahead of time and simply have a conversation about how things were going. I think it was less stressful for everyone and the parents could excuse the students for part of the conference if there was something they wanted to share with me privately.

I tell my students that I don't tell their parents anything I wouldn't tell them.

There were a couple of funny moments last week. In the middle of his conference, one student asked if he could have a private word with his dad. (I still don't know what that was about.)

One student stayed up past his bedtime to finish a writing assignment so he wouldn't be in trouble. He didn't realize that the computer showed that he turned it in just before midnight, so he was in a different kind of trouble.

Three students made a pact of silence the day after their conference, because they got into trouble for talking. Third graders can't stay silent for three minutes, not the three hours they planned.

I love my job.

Here is a link to my newest free product in my Teachers Pay Teachers store, Conference Recording Sheet.

It's good to be back.

Nine and a half months ago there was a knock on my door and someone delivered a message that would alter my life's course forever. I had a choice at that moment. The news could make me grow bitter, or I could absorb it and let it change me into a more compassionate human being. Each morning when I wake up, I try to choose the latter.

During the school year, several things were in maintenance mode as I struggled to come to terms with what my life was about to become. This blog was one of them, and I wondered what my writing future looked like.

This summer I dove into my mess, determined to find answers and direction. I am figuring out what I need to let go of in this new season and what to hang on to. It was not the summer I planned on, but I was grateful to have time and space to do some self-examination.

A few days ago, I was offered a social media coordinator position for a local Celebrate Recovery group. This is an opportunity to use what I am learning to help and encourage others. It is an opportunity to use my pain for something good. As a result I plan to stop writing regular posts for Artistry of Education and dedicate that time to writing about hope, grace, and freedom in knowing the truth.

I have enjoyed the teacher blogging space for the last six and a half years. I plan to leave the blog and stores up as resources for a while. It's time for my writing life to follow my new calling.

Thank you for reading and sharing with me all these years,

This year I modified my Settlers unit to incorporate what we learned in science. Instead of creating a historical colony, we studied the plans for a colony on Mars. We created a class bulletin board with characters and the setting for our colony. This became a jumping off point for several writing projects.
Esther Friesner imagines the childhood of Helen of Troy. Helen of Sparta is being trained to be a princess and a bride, but she prefers to learn how to fight and have adventures.

I would recommend this book for girls fifth grade and above. Our sixth graders learn about ancient cultures and this book would fit perfectly in that unit.

This is a completely unsolicited testimonial of my experience using Kahoot in my classroom this year. I do occasionally write posts for products when people ask me to, but only for something I have actually tried in my classroom. My opinion is always my own.

My students love to play Kahoot.

I started having them create math quizzes for each other at the end of a unit. They were hooked.

Tech sites are great when they work, but not all of them are very responsive when something goes wrong. I am happy to report that Kahoot got back to me every single time with a helpful suggestion.

My students are on 1:1 Chromebooks. We log into Google for everything. The problem started when they changed or forgot their passwords and tried to log in again.

The password reset process is an email sent to the account holder's email. They problem is our district will not let students receive email from anyone outside our district. (This is a good policy in general, it just made it a challenge to complete this particular project.)

After several emails back and forth to Kahoot, they gave me a work-around that allowed me to control password changes. I was very impressed with their helpfulness and wanted to give them a shout out.

Now I love Kahoot!
I used the page above for a formative assessment and activity several times during our unit. I wanted to know what my students knew about the relationship between the earth, the sun, and the moon and how those relationships cause days, nights, seasons, and eclipses.

Students cut out the three circles and demonstrate in partners or small groups the answers to the five questions. I walked around the groups to note who understood and who didn't. I had certain groups demonstrate the correct answers for the whole class.
Words change their meaning. When I first taught fifth grade, I created this activity for students to look up the meanings of rights, responsibilities, and privileges. They would brainstorm examples and we would discuss what this would look like in our classroom.

I taught other grade levels for several years and returned to fifth grade this year. As I was preparing my beginning of the year activities, I realized that how I thought about privilege in the past had changed.

I have updated this lesson to reflect the idea that privilege isn't always something that is earned. I still call my incentive system "Privileges", but it is with the understanding that privilege has different meanings in different contexts.
