Today's freebie for Friday is a style of Venn Diagram with lines already drawn so students can neatly write in facts. There is space on the type to copy the title of two articles the student is comparing.
I would use this organizer as a part of a gradual release lesson. First we would read two articles and compare and contrast as a class. Next I would use this with partner work. I could use it with small groups who needed re-teaching. It could be a part of independent practice after we have used it several other times in class.
Scholastic News often has two or more articles with a single topic. I especially like the opinion page where opposing opinions are expressed with supporting information.

Frequent readers of Artistry of Education know that I have been teaching English Language Learners for the last six weeks while their teacher has been on maternity leave. I have been adapting some of my lessons to better match what my students need.
I created the matching activity below to go with a unit on parts of the face and senses. Students cut out the cards and match them on the sentence frames. Depending on their level, you can have them practice reading or writing the sentences.

I read and review a book a week for this blog. Recently another teacher asked me about the reading level for a book I recommended. I immediately went to Scholastic.com and typed in the title to their Book Wizard feature. I have used this feature for years to help students connect with books.
Many of you may already know about this great feature. Scholastic sells many books and they report the reading level using a variety of measures: grade level equivalent, guided reading (A-Z), DRA, and Lexile.
I know book reports have fallen out of favor in some circles, but I still like them. The lessons I designed incorporate reading, writing, speaking and listening across genre. Today I want to share with you a sample non-fiction book report for biographies.

Good stories leave the reader guessing what is going to happen next. Students can use this organizer to record their changes in thinking about the character and plot as they read. The sentence starters may be used as a writing prompt in reading notebooks. This could also be blown up to make an anchor chart.

I have some old Kids National Geographic Magazines in my classroom and my students covet the animal trading cards inside some of the issues. I decided to use their interest to create a mini-research form.

These can be adapted for any animal, real or imaginary. You can require a certain number glued to an index card with illustrations. I like having open ended projects like this for students who finish other work.
When I first started teaching, I was a substitute for several years. I loved visiting other classrooms and collecting ideas for my future classroom. This was before computers in every room, no internet, and no Pinterest. (I could never go back to that.)
Lately, I have been collecting and creating anchor charts and graphic organizers to teach and practice reading comprehension. I have collected far more ideas than I will ever use. While a few of the items are paid products (full disclosure here), many are free downloads or amazing charts created by some talented teachers.
