Math Spies: What about the remainder?

Math Spies is my problem-solving website that I have used in my classroom.  What about the remainder is a series of problems where students must make sense of what is happening in the scenario so they can record the remainder correctly.

Here are the seven problems:

Also, I have recently expanded this unit so that students solve the problems and analyze others' mistakes.  In this paid product, I included an answer key and a rubric to assess problem-solving ability.

You can purchase Math Spies Problem Solving: Division with Remainders in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

Math Spies Problem Solving: Division with Remainders is also available in my Teachers Notebook store.

Math Spies Gathering Supplies -- Long Division Problems

Math Spies is my math problem-solving site.  The series of problems Gathering Supplies gives students an opportunity to practice long division.  There are no remainders for this set of problems.

Math Spies Taking Inventory: Multiplying Large Numbers

Have you visited Math Spies?  Here is where I post math problem-solving tasks for my students, and other teachers are welcome to use it.  (I am taking a break from posting this summer, but the archives are full of problems.)

The series Taking Inventory is about multiplying large numbers.  Here are the links to the seven problems:

Math Spies: Reclaiming Chaos Compound -- Math Problem Solving

Math Spies is my math problem-solving website where I have posted every Wednesday morning this school year.  Reclaiming Chaos Compound is a series of seven problems where students need to record all of the factor pairs of a number.

I use problems like these to help my students make sense of problems and communicate completely their answers.  I tell them that if I handed their paper to another teacher who wasn't in the room, that teacher should be able to understand how they solved the problem.

Here are the links to the seven problems:

Update: I recently expanded this unit so students solve the problems and analyze others' mistakes.

Math Spies Problem Solving with Factor Pairs is available for purchase here in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

This product is also available in my Teacher's Notebook store.

Math Spies Episode 8 -- Secret Rooms

In addition to Artistry of Education, I have a blog called Math Spies that is dedicated to math problem-solving. I post a new problem each Wednesday.

In Episode 8, students use what they know about area to determine if a building has a secret room.  Click here for "How to Find Secret Rooms."  In the building at the top, the hallway extends the length of the building.  The building underneath has a "secret room."  Students are given the dimensions of the building and the dimensions of the known rooms and they must determine if there is a secret room and how big it is.

You can find the other seven problems in the series by clicking here, and scrolling halfway down the page.

I expanded this set into a 32 task card set which you can purchase at Teachers Pay Teachers and Teachers Notebook.

Quilt Square Codes -- Math Spies Episode 7

Have you visited Math Spies lately?  Math Spies is my math problem-solving website.  I post a problem a week each Wednesday.

Episodes 7 has seven problems with an extra example problem to show students how to solve the others.  I call it Quilt Square Code Problems, because, students determine the fraction of each color of a square like the one above.  They use those fractions to solve a code word.

Click here for the example problem on Math Spies. To solve the other seven problems in the series, click here.

I made a set of task cards with these codes and 24 more available here at Teacher's Notebook and available here at Teachers Pay Teachers.

"Math Spies" Returns

I'd like to invite you to a math problem-solving website I wrote called  Math Spies. I started it more than three years ago, but then took a break that ended up being over a year.

Last year my students were using it and started clamoring for more problems. The first problems took longer for me to write and post than it did for my students to solve. I decided to make a change in format.

I plan to do a question a week each Wednesday morning for the school year. I just completed a set of questions about probability called The Case of the Corrupt Carnival.

I moderate comments for websites I use in my own classroom.  I do read and post relevant comments.

I'd love to have you try the problems with your students and let me know what you think. It's free.

Math Spies and Function Tables

Meet Maynard the Hacker.  He has hacked into the Math Spies Mathalator 3000 and sabotaged it so the Math Spies' Coded Messages won't work.
Episode 5 of Math Spies is all about using function tables to solve coded messages.  When Maynard commits his nefarious scheme, only a skilled mathematician can find the mistakes, reprogram the Mathalator using the correct rule and decipher the messages.

Math Spies is my problem-solving website that I began developing as an after school class.  Each episode focuses on a strand of mathematics as the Math Spies combat evil with their superior computational skills.

If you prefer a paper pencil version of this unit, you can purchase this 14 page product from my Teachers Pay Teachers store or my Teachers Notebook store.

Free Math Spies Episode 3 Teacher Guide

Frequent readers of this blog know that Math Spies is a website I created to encourage math problem-solving.  Math Spies Episode 3: Around the World is a webquest where students solve math problems to find the coordinates for a place on the globe.  Each correct place leads them to a code word.  If they locate all seven places correctly, they have a coded message.
I created an organizer for my students to keep track of their answers.  I have posted Math Spies Episode 3 Teacher's Guide as a free item in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.
Math Spies Episode 3 is also available in my Teacher's Notebook store.
